June 24, 2009 … Chief Fisheries Officer, Cheryl Appleton is notifying the public that turtle nesting season has begun and monitoring is taking place at various sites.
Appleton said, “During this time of year it is usual to see females nesting on our beaches as well as hatchlings emerging from their nests. The general public is reminded that it is against the law to have in your possession any turtle during the closed season.”
The Public should note it is also against the law to disturb any turtle nests or remove eggs either for sale or personal use. “Any person found in contravention of the law is liable on summary conviction to a fine or up to twelve months imprisonment.” The Chief Fisheries officer added.
Here are some pointers if you see a nesting turtle or find hatchlings on the beach.
* Do not disturb them. Stay a safe distance away from nesting females.
* Do not make loud noises or shine lights in their direction as this will interrupt their nesting activity.
* If you find hatchlings on the beach, do not remove them from the beach.
If you see a nesting turtle contact The Fisheries Division at 462-1372/462-6106 or the EAG turtle coordinator at 720-6955 after working hours.
