On Saturday, May 29, the Antigua & Barbuda Horse Society (ABHS) will be hosting the first show jumping event of 2010 at Spring Hill Riding Club in
Falmouth. It is a national event involving riders and horses from both Spring Hill Riding Club in Falmouth and Rivendell Stables in Woods
Estate. The event starts Saturday morning at 8:30 am with two levels of competition, junior and senior, with competitors ranging from 9 years old up to adult. The show will last until midday. Some refreshments will be on sale and ABHS invites the general public to turn out and watch these young riders as they compete against each other over sponsored jumps. In addition to the competition, Spadicia Harris, the sponsored rider in the ABHS Riding for the Disabled Programme, will be riding a routine set to music. Harris, who has a prosthetic leg and has only been riding for five months, performed remarkably well at ABHS’ previous show in February and her performance brought tears to many spectators’ eyes.
The programme has been set up with funds from a private benefactor to promote horse riding in Antigua & Barbuda. The last ABHS event was attended by Sports Coordinator Anne Jonas and Director of Sports Mervyn Richards from the Ministry of Education, Gender, Sports and Youth Affairs. Richards presented the riders with their prizes and gave words of encouragement.
He stated that it was fantastic to see many young equestrian riders in Antigua and also even better to see the great support that they
receive from their parents and coaches.
