EcoZone Summer Camp gets a taste of Carnival

Friday was the EcoZone Summer Camp’s talent show at the Mary E. Pigott Primary School. Campers sang a number of songs, danced, recited poetry and gave karate demonstrations.

There were several highlights of the afternoon as Soca Finalists Shani and Ricardo Drew performed their songs for the campers. Ricardo stated that he really enjoyed performing for the campers and looks forward to more opportunities to interact with kids. He further stated that he particularly liked the chance to expose children to his chosen art form. Drew sang his songs for the season “Like Glue” and “Get Wild”.

Shani also agreed with Drew and encourages the general public to support them at the Soca Monarch Semi-Finals.

There was another guest performance at the camp in the form of Calypsonian Banana Joe. Banana Joe works for the Environment Division, and has wooed crowds with his song “Concern for My Country”. Though Banana Joe has not made it to the Finals he was able to perform an original poem for the campers which encouraged them to be wise in their life choices.

Overall, the camp coordinators were pleased with the event. EcoZone Summer camp continues until the 6th of August. The camp, which is organised by the Environment Division, seeks to sensitise children about their environment and how it affects them. This year, the camp is focused on endemic animals in Antigua and Barbuda, as well as invasive alien species. The camp is sponsored by the government of Antigua and Barbuda, the SIRMM Project, the IWCAM project, Tyre Master, Harney Motors, Local Oil Ltd, LIME and WIOC
