Antigua prepares for Annual Seafood Fiesta on July 4, 2010

Get ready to plunge yourself in the deep, at Urlings Wharf, when the Ministry of Agriculture stages its third Seafood Fiesta, on July 4, from 12 noon –until.

This event is being staged, as part of activities, which coincides with World Fisherman’s Day, acknowledged annually, on June 29th.

Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing & the Environment Hilson Baptiste says the highly anticipated activity, will see new addition to the menus, improved facilities, and fresh seafood on sale.

According to the minister, this initiative is geared towards the promotion and sustainability of the fishing stock and the eco-system. One of the gov’t thrust as outlined in the 2010 budget is to develop, the agro –tourism linkages through sustainable livelihood.

“Our mandate is to promote our heritage, promote our agro-tourism linkages and build pride through festive activities which will definitely enhance the quality of life in our community,” the minister said.

Events co-ordinator, Marcelle Freeland –John noted it’s a great Sunday afternoon’s lime for the entire family. “You and your family can enjoy delicious foods of the sea at this outstanding event which has been consistently recognized and is fast becoming a household name. Admission is free, only a healthy appetite is required,” she adds.

The fantastic seafood for which Urlings is famous will be the highlight. Carefully selected food vendors offer a wide variety of seafood dishes and other delicacies of the sea.

Meanwhile, past food vendors menus have included coconut shrimp, fried oysters, grits a ya ya, blackened mahi mahi, green tomato gumbo, crab ball, fried grouper, curried conchs, lobsters, seafood rice ….

The last festival held, last year November, saw, close to 6,000 individuals in attendance. For starters, the Seafood Festival, is being held in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere where attendees enjoy some of the area’s finest seafood and browse the wide variety of items for sale.
Some of the proposed activity for the event bounce castle, swimming competition, boat tour and of course entertainment will be provided.
