St. John's, Antigua (February 5, 2009) – Antigua and Barbuda, welcomed a cruise with a twist on February 5, when 343 passengers from the Caribbean Princess cruise ship, took to the streets of Antigua, running, for this year's Cruise To Run.
This is the third year that Cruise To Run, a cruise that gives runners the unique opportunity to not only participate in the sport they love but, enjoy the beauty and hospitality of the Caribbean, is being held in Antigua.
We are very happy to lend our support to this unique event, said CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, Colin C. James during his welcome to the runners from Canada, United States, Bermuda and England.
"Antigua and Barbuda has the ideal climate for your activity, and based on the scenic route that has been laid out for you, we can definitely guarantee that you will enjoy the run."
The 13 kilometer course which began at the historic Redcliffe Quay, took the runners through the scenic village of Five Islands and up to Fort Barrington one of Antigua's many historical sites before returning to the Nevis Pier.
Upon completion of the course, participants expressed their pleasure with the event, with many first time visitors to the island remarking on the beauty of the destination and remarkable view from atop the fort.
According to Jerry Friesen, Race Director, "the event has more than doubled from the inaugural in 2007. Runners were so excited about the event and their run and fun on Antigua that they have already booked Cruise to Run to visit Antigua in 2010."
As part of their visit, runners also came prepared to donate books for use in the national library. Minister of Education Bertrand Joseph was on hand to greet participants and accept the novels. One such novel being, an autographed copy of children's book The Kissing Hand which was presented on behalf of the author.
The runners were also expected to journey to Freyes Beach to participate in an afternoon hash with the Antigua Hash House Harriers.
